About this Recipe
Woohoo! The Christmas season has officially started. I’ve got to admit, with snow falling early this year, I couldn’t wait to kick off my Christmas baking (and sipping mulled wine!). I already made my first batch of Christmas cookies earlier this week (followed by a huge batch of homemade Mulled Wine aka Glühwein) but it was the last week of November so it’s fine. Right???
The best part about Christmas baking (other than eating it all!) is the scent that fills your home. Some spices that instantly conjure up Christmas are cinnamon, cloves, star anise, nutmeg, and cloves. They are my go-to ingredients over the Christmas season and I use them in everything from cookies to mulled wine. Sometimes you can find pre-mixed Christmas Spice blends at your local grocery store but it’s not readily available everywhere. That’s why I always make my own Christmas Spice. Let me show you how it’s made!
Ingredients for Christmas Spice
You will need a combination of well-known spices, including cinnamon, ginger, cloves, star anise, nutmeg, cardamon. If desired, you could also add lemon peel and orange peel.
How to make Christmas Spice
Either use ground spices or grind whole spices by using a spice grinder (I recommend whole spices if you prefer a stronger flavour!). Simply (1) combine all spices, (2) mix well, and (3) store homemade Christmas Spice in an airtight container for up to eight weeks. Done. You might have to stock up on some of the spices but it’s definitely worth it. It’s so versatile and can be added to pretty much anything.
How to serve Christmas Spice
Basically, you can add this Christmas Spice to whatever you want to have a Christmas flavour AND adjust the flavour to your own liking by increasing or decreasing the amount of individual spices. Here are a few recipes you might like:
