About this Recipe
I’ve got a confession to make. Although I love smoothies, I don’t drink them during the cold winter months (weird, I know – but I just don’t!). Having said that, as soon as it gets slightly warmer, I start craving smoothies like crazy. I could drink one every day (and most of the time I do!). Over the years, I’ve tried many smoothie recipes, and this Green Breakfast Smoothie is the combination I always come back to. Whenever I have this green smoothie for breakfast, I feel really good about myself for already getting fruits and veggies before lunch (and I love how it keeps me full until then!).
Also, this Green Breakfast Smoothie is great for people who have never had a green smoothie before OR those who don’t like green smoothies. If your kids refuse to eat their greens, be sneaky and have them drink their greens instead. Trust me, it converts EVERYONE. I’ve tested it plenty of times and it ALWAYS works (family, friends, colleagues – they love it!). Actually, Chris didn’t use to drink smoothies until I came up with the recipe for this Green Breakfast Smoothie. It’s perfectly smooth and creamy (and happens to be vegan!). Ingredients for a Green Breakfast Smoothie
This Green Breakfast Smoothie is made with 6 simple ingredients: almond milk, baby spinach, bananas, almond butter, vanilla protein powder, and hemp hearts. You could also play around and make this smoothie your own. Simply substitute the almond butter for nut butter of choice (e.g., cashew butter, peanut butter OR peanut butter powder) and use your milk of choice instead of almond milk (e.g., cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk etc.).
How to make a Green Breakfast Smoothie
It couldn’t be easier to prepare this Green Breakfast Smoothie. It literally takes 5 minutes. It starts with spinach blended with your milk of choice. Next comes a frozen banana for sweetness, followed by the nut butter, vanilla protein powder, and hemp hearts. That’s it. Easy, right?
Having said that, there are a few rules to follow in order to get perfect results. First, ALWAYS blend up your greens and liquid first. Then add your remaining ingredients and blend again. Second, use frozen bananas. Simply cut and freeze your (very ripe) banana beforehand. This makes your smoothie not only extra chilly but also adds texture. The result is a smooth and creamy smoothie that’s insanely delicious. If you follow these rules, I promise your green smoothie will be love at first sip.
Also, you can EASILY prepare this Green Breakfast Smoothie ahead of time. Simply blend the night before and store in fridge until the next morning. Just make sure (1) to use an airtight lid to keep it as fresh as possible, and (2) to give it a good shake before you open and drink it.
How to serve a Green Breakfast Smoothie
This Green Breakfast Smoothie makes a delicious breakfast to have on hand throughout the week. We’re usually drinking it in the morning for a boost of healthy greens to start the day but it would also be a great snack to have before or after a workout.

Green Breakfast Smoothie
- 1 cup almond milk *
- 1 cup baby spinach
- 1 banana sliced and frozen
- 1 tbsp Easy-Peasy Almond Butter **
- 1 tbsp vanilla protein powder optional***
- 1 tbsp hemp hearts
- 3 ice cubes optional
- Blend almond milk and spinach until smooth.
- Add the remaining ingredients and blend again until smooth. Done.
- Enjoy your Green Breakfast Smoothie!
*Can be substituted with milk of choice (e.g. cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk, etc.)
**Can be substituted with nut butter of choice (homemade OR store-bought!). Alternatively, you could use 1 tbsp peanut butter powder (do NOT mix with water!).
